Card Contest Winners 2016

Grand Prize Winner

Artist: Sherry Morley
Title: Christmas At The Walkers

Stamps used: The Walkers Portrait, Zombie With Walker, Zombie Decorating Tree.

Christmas at the Walkers is a 2 inch deep shadow box style card with cutouts and details at three depths. Sherry put an incredible amount of detail into her card design. On the front, she has taken the brain from our Zombie Christmas tree stamp and reproduced it over and over again to use as garland that is suspended across the front panel opening and is also strung up on the second panel inside the card's shadow box. Each tiny brain is cut out and colored and glued to the garland. Two zombies with walkers are used on the front panel, Our zombie with Christmas tree is on the second interior panel inside, and our "The Walkers" Zombie family portrait is on the final panel inside along with a santa hat clad Zombie with walker. The card is rich in details such as background papers used to recreate the "rooms" inside the card complete with wallpaper effect and flooring. The entire card easily folds flat to be put into an envelope. We were so impressed with the creativity and level of detail that we awarded Sherry our grand prize in this year's contest. Congratulations Sherry! Your card is truly a work of art!

Title: Hiding Hedgehog At The Library

Stamps used: Reading Giraffe, Reading Hedgehog.

This card made us laugh out loud. The library is assembled from layers of cardstock and fabric. The storage room door is made of fabric and can be lifted up to reveal the hedgehog reading inside. The card was a masterpiece of creativity and included many original details. And, of course the literary message is clear (or seemed clear to us): The library is for every kind of patron and has reading material to suit all interests. So, visit your library!

Artist's instructions:

I used plaid scrapbook paper for wallpaper, wood plank paper for the floor, and patterned card stock for the mop board. I cut a rectangle of white card stock and used colored pencils to draw shelves and books. I cut a piece of burlap for the rug. The reading giraffe was colored with colored pencils, cut out and popped up with foam tape. The quote by the giraffe is from A Tale of Two Cities. The storage room curtain is a burlap ribbon. Flower pot is a sticker with flower embellishments. The hiding Hedgehog is reading from Sidney Sheldon's, Sands of Time.

Title: By The Light Of The Harvest Moon

Stamps used: Tiny Bison, Hay Bale, Hay Bales, Grain Elevator.

This is a larger format card with thoughtful stitch effect layering and a real glow in the dark moon and stars. The hills are overlapping layers of cardstock and the overall scene was beautifully rendered. The harvest theme was well done.

Artist's instructions:

The Stars and Moon glow in the dark. Using paste and star stencils, make the stars. Let dry. Cut 2 1/2 inch circle and spray with Glow by Krylon Spray Paint. Once stars have dried, keep stencils on and spray them as well. Cut landscape out ( I used stitched borders by Poppy Stamps). Stamp and cut out Grain Elevator and hay stacks. Stamp hay bales and Buffalo. Layer with burlap and embellish.

Title: Howl-O-Weenie

Stamps used: Spooky, Cat on Broom, Bat, Cat On Tombstone, Tree, Cerberus, Skeleton Motorcycle, Graveyard, Music Tombstone, RIP Tombstone, Dachshund Hotdog, Dachshund On Broom, Dachshund Mummy, Broom, Happy Howl-O-Weenie.

This card was a larger format card done as a Halloween cemetery scene. The artist used a variety of stamps combined with superb positioning and effective masking technique to create a layered scene with depth and originality. The images were richly colored and shaded to create a riveting night time scene. Our team loved the card that resulted!

Artist's instruction:

This card is a maze of 18 different stamps combined with masking and using a stamp-a-ma-jig. Most of my stamps are wood mounted, so using a misti tool was not an option. Copics were used for coloring and a wink of stella pen (white shimmer) for accents, and a uniball pen for highlights. I covered the background paper with cheese cloth for dimension and raised it up with foam. Found some black tulle and tied that on the bottom. The hardest part in making a night scene - lots, and lots of ink!

Title: Tropical Birthday Shaker Card

Stamps used: Tropical Island, Birthday Flamingo, Lets Party.

This card is very polished. The cuts are crisp, the cardstock colors are well coordinated, and the coloring is well done. The shaker parts are assembled cleanly and with enough room for the sea shells inside the card to move around freely. The card contains real sand and several tiny sea shells collected from the beach. The card is lovely and made with precision and care. We loved it!
